BMW i8 Concept

Completing its new i-range, BMW has taken the wraps off its i8 Concept eco-supercar. The production version of the i8 Concept is expected to stand as BMW’s flagship offering.
The i8 employs an innovative plug-in hybrid drivetrain, featuring the same 170 horsepower electric motor found in the i3 at its front axle and a 220 horsepower, 221 lb-ft of torque three-cylinder at the rear. The two power plants are connected via an “energy tunnel”, which also houses the i8’s battery pack.
With a combined 390 horsepower pulsing to all four wheels, the i8 is capable of accelerating from 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Despite that supercar-like performance, BMW says the i8 returns 94mpg imperial on the combined cycle. For trips up to 20 miles, the i8 is capable of traveling on electric power alone.
The low placement of the plug-in’s battery along with a perfect 50/50 weight distribution should ensure the i8 lives up to BMW’s reputation as the ultimate driving machine.
Although most supercars only offer seating for two, the i8 uses a 2+2 seating configuration. However, BMW says the i8’s cabin is driver-focused and is designed to “immerse the driver fully in the unique driving experience.”
Look for the i8 to hit BMW showrooms in 2014.

BMW i3 Concept

Following an official announcement earlier this year, BMW has unveiled a concept version of its long-awaited i3 electric city car at an event in Germany.
the i3 is able to offer a generous cabin size despite its small footprint. BMW’s describes the i3’s interior – which seats four – as “lounge-like”, thanks to the use of natural fibers and naturally tanned leathers. The i3 features opposing coach doors and dual cargo compartments, ensuring the i3 is useful as an everyday driver. Power for the i3 is provided by an electric motor driving the rear axle. The i3 boasts 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque which, when combined with the i3’s superlight weight, results in a 0-60 run in under 8 seconds.
BMW failed to detail the i3’s battery, but says the city car can “travel long distances on a single charge.”
Given the i3’s target market, innovative technology is a big part of its package, with the EV featuring a number of smartphone functions. Some of the i3’s technologies include the ability to find nearby charging stations, a smartphone app to precondition the vehicle at the touch of a button and even intelligence assistance systems to “ease the stress on drivers in monotonous city driving situations and allow them to arrive at their destination more safely and in a more relaxed state of mind.”
Look for the i3 Concept to make its first appearance at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show before making production in 2013.
